Civilization IV Colonization review

This game provide rather successfully the mood old timer were looking for.

The civilisation like interface is however, in my opinion, not appropriate. Also change in the game mechanics and in the pace of action do not reproduce accuratly what colonisation fans were looking for. Bought this game some time ago and didnt go past my 5th game.

There are however great fan mods that greatly enhance the game and give it back the original feel everyone was looking for.

I played hundreds of hours in the original Colonization, and this is a relatively faithful recreation for the modern day. It has its issues, most notably poor AI, and no real gameplay improvements over the original. All that said, I've still clocked in many hours with the new game, especially if you look for third party mods made by the community to improve the game well above and beyond what either the original or this new one can offer. All this said, it is still one of my all time favorite RTS games.

GOt this game free and really haven't even bothered to play it. This company has really gone downhill and the fact they released this as a standalone game and now cant give it away attests to that. They streamlined the gameplay but also abandoned much of the strategy.

I haven’t plaid the original game but I have plaid all of the civilization series games. I do like the colonization but it feels more like an expansion or a DLC then a new game. For that I think 19.95€ is too much for it. I’d say that at 10€ this would be a must for any civilization fan that wants to try the game in a new way. It is not civilization but a similar game on the same game engine as Civ IV. Its replayability is poor but if you can get it for less then 10 and you like CIV games then go for it.

I was a real fan of the good old classic Colonization on Amiga. One of the games that I spend hundreds of hours as a teenager.

New version on Civ IV engine, allowed me to remind old times.

This is good old Colonization with a new look and few new features.

If you liked the old one, this is MUST HAVE game.

A okay remake of the classic game. However it can be said that it does lack additional features one migh expect from a remake of such a game. For instance one would have anticipated new victory conditions which would have encouraged different play styles and ways to win.

A weak AI also makes the game a little less playworthy than one would have hoped. ut a decent buy nonetheless. You'll have some fun with it.

I was looking forward to this game as a fan of the first Colonization, and many aspects are just as fun as I remembered. It's really quite fun building up your colonies and becoming more independent over time. Turning your struggling colony into a mercantile powerhouse is just fun to be a part of. However, it seems to me that the game switches focus towards the end. The Revolution itself contains an absolutely absurd amount of troops, and to win you have to focus on military production for far too many boring turns of 'create cannon, make muskets, arm guys'. In my opinion the game is worth playing, but the end game is poorly executed.

This is a good update of a classic game. It combines the great graphics and mechanics of Civ IV with the colonial concept of the original Colonization. While it does not have the same kind of depth as games like EU and Victoria, it is an enjoyable game for a quick strategy fix. I'd recommend it for people who loved games like Alpha Centauri and Master of Magic.

Being a fan of the original Colonization, which with its nice flair and graphics i even preferred to Civilization back then i was happy to see this game being updated. But there was also fear. Will it be able to fulfill the what i expected from it? After havin played it for some time now i can say that at least it wasnt a disappointment. Landing in the New World and building your colony from there is still as much fun as it was in the original game. There were not much changes to the basic concept of the game, which is quite good. Its basically Colonization with CIV IV grapics. Still it would have been nice to add some new concepts to the game, the colonial congresss (advisors with bonuses)feature for example seems a little basic and even looked more polished in the original game. The replayibility of the game is also two-sided: It is fun to start a new colony , but from there things always are a little repetitive until you reach Independence and the game ends. So i would say the game captures the flair of the Original very good, the Civ IV controls make it very easy to access and esepcially the early game is always a lot of fun. Still in the long run you run out of challenges a little (just making the difficulty level haerder isnt really satisfying, you just would like more content). So i would say this is a nice game, but if you arent a fan of Colonization you surely get more bang for the buck with CIV IV as it is much more complex and challenging.
