Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

Rating: 4.5 (486 votes cast)

CHIVALRY: Medieval Warfare is a first-person slasher with a focus on multi-player. Featuring competitive online combat that seeks to capture the experience of truly being on a medieval battlefield. We've drawn our inspiration from the intensity and epicness of swordfighting movies such as 300, Gladiator and Braveheart and we want to bring that experience to the hands of a gamer.

The game is skill-based and controls like a FPS, but instead of guns and grenades, players are given swords, shields, maces, battleaxes and longbows. Set in a fictional yet gritty and realistic world, players will fight in fast paced online battles besieging castles, raiding medieval villages and fighting for glory in the arena with up to 32 players.

  • Deep melee combat system provides players with a huge range of responsive combat options
  • Adjust your attacks and blocks in real time with the mouse for precise and full control of the action
  • Wield an arsenal of up to 60 brutal weapons ranging from broad swords and battle axes to longbows and javelins
  • Dynamic objective system brings team tactics and strategy to the forefront as players batter down gates, raid villages and assassinate enemy royalty to achieve victory.
  • Use a variety of siege weapons ranging from catapults, boiling oil, ballista, battering rams and more
  • Vast, lush environments that transport the player to a gritty and immersive medieval world.
  • Offline play options that allow players to gain familiarity with the controls and gameplay before being thrust into the action.

its a fun game overall, a little clunky but once you get used to it cutting people apart or decapitating them is a rush. the objective games are my favorite as they last the longest and you respawn right away.

Good game, but it really lacks scenarios (less than ten). I would have also liked teams against computer. Avatars dont last long: two strikes and you're dead. I got it for a good price but wouldn't pay thirty dollars for it.

Really good action packed medieval game. Nonstop limbchopping and headcrushing going on all the time, in some of the most gorey fashions I've seen in modern games. Every attack with a melee weapon feels heavy and satisfying when you strike your enemy. Fantastic!

One of the best online medieval games with lots of gore. It's definitely more better than WOTR. If you wanna jump to hype action on medieval time then this is the best one for you. Community is great too. Definitely more than recommended if you like multiplayer w/ medieval factors.

If you ever wanted complete and total insanity, this is the game for you. Stabbing, smashing, even shooting people in the head is in this game. The complete and utter carnage of this game is what really makes it shine. The gruesome parts of a man and the screeching of pain is were this game deserves to be bought.

Chivalry is fun, visceral action. Slice away at enemies and watch the gore. It's a ton of fun to play with friends, and even without friends it's a blast! It actually takes some skill to kill in this game, and if you're good you can make a lot of kills before you finally die. This is a game that will definitely test your ability, and you'll definitely enjoy it!

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare review

By FlippantSausage posted 11th March

This game is a very fun and viscerally appealing good time. There are a couple of flaws, like a bug that sometimes makes the server list blank, and sometimes the collision detection is spotty.

On the other hand, it has a very wide variety of weapons to choose from, and they seem pretty balanced to me. You aren't very durable, so look for plenty of short fights. Teamkilling happens a great deal, and entirely by accident due to the simple fact you are swinging a razor sharp sword in a big arc.

The combat is innovative and very intuitive, with a lot of room for skill to win out. The developer, Torn Banner, also recently added an update with a bunch of new weapons, maps, and a duel mode. As far as I know the developer plans to continue this kind of support, with free content additions.

Well worth buying, and a bunch of fun. Held back a little by some very forgivable technical flaws. Someone said this game was "The worlds best online yelling simulator." which is also entirely true.

Play this game with friends, and cut their heads off, even if they are on your team. This game has a high rate of crazy "omfg I can't believe that happened" moments, so fun and the combat has a nice amount of depth to it.

Great Gameplay its pretty much spot on, being fast and skill based, its definitely takes some time to get used too. The Grapihcs look decent in my book, nothing fancy though.

The combat is after an hours play is simply outstanding the kills feel meaty and satisfying the team play works most times and some of the maps are great the gladiator arena being my favourite.Theres loads of weapons and shields which can suit all play styles whether you want a two handed or sword and shield you can even be a archer. If you buy it you will be hooked.

Lop off some heads!

By Dave93 posted 21st February

Do you like limb lopping? Blood? Then you will love this! Yep it can get buggy(Matches sometimes don't finish when there is no more enemy to kill, and balance can be iffy) But hopefully it'll get a patch soon.

BUT the main thing it's FUN and addictive,So if your bored of the same old generic FPS games buy this.

I am sorry to say that this game's development is probably going no where. The online is way too laggy, the "rank system" sucks as it takes too much time out of anyone's life just to unlock any new weapons. And the development is actually being done online by geeks who most of them have not seen eachother and lack real motivation.

The true value: $2.50

Replay: just when you are bored

Comparable to: Skyrim without anything (but at least it has online! lol)

Well it's a good game, at times a bit unbalanced and some of the time it doesn't feel like the game is actually finished. Haven't downloaded the Jan 2013 update yet so could be hope.

Chivalry

By drazzeman posted 16th January

Bought this game a couple of weeks ago and I'm quite surprised by all the 5 star ratings in here.

I believe that this game still needs a bit of tweeks in terms of making it feel less laggy.

Feel laggy?

Yeah, I'm sitting on an i7 3770k @ 4,5GHz with 16 GB of RAM and a GTX 680 and the FPS is great, no stutter or anything.. -it truly runs great.

The problem I'm having is the fact that even when playing on a server with 50 ping (I have a 200Mbit connection) I feel as if I'm back in my boys room, 12 years ago, playing on my 56kbit dial-up from time to time. It is quite annoying on a game that relies so much on timed blocks and attacks.

The gameplay and estetics are still great and I really recomend this game. A bit of laggy feeling can always be patched while you can't save a bad game! Wich this most certainly is not.

Probably one of the must fun games I've played in a long time. It is unique and very different from the regular online shooters and I like it. While the patching process is slow right now, it is still very fun and a good buy.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare review

Chivalry is made by the same guys that made Age of Chivalry, a source mod, and in this game you play as a medieval knight, warrior, soldier in diffrent gamemodes like Free For All, TDM, Team Objective and Last Team standing.

The great thing about Chivalry is it's combat, it's simple with 3 attacks, a block and feint (fake attack), yet it's deep, and when you are in actual combat trying to block your opponent attack and counter, it makes you think about your attacks instead of swinging wildly at the air and it can turn really tense when you fight with your allies agaist your enemies.

So if you want a diffrent multiplayer game, or wish for a first person swordfighting game get this game, you won't regret it.

Horrible game. It's the same thing over and over. If you like cutting off limbs this game is for you. If you like depth or anything else then this game is not for you. There is no single player mode like it suggests. Very dissapointed.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare review

By Thomsen93 posted 28th December 2012

The game has a very fun and addictive gameplay, coupled with great immersive settings and varied styles of plays. The style of the textures and animations is absolutely amazing, and gives a very medieval feel to the game. A very good feature is how while it has some unlockeable weapons, they are few and not at all overpowered, which makes the gameplay heavily relying on skills.

The only downsides of this game are that it does not feature cavalry nor proper sieges. So, to conclude, it's a game worth the money. Wouldn't buy it if it costed more than it does though, since it is merely a multiplayer, and as far as I know, there are no mods for it.

Very good game, a must have if you like medieval settings or/and love to bash people's head with melee weapons.

The devs also promised new maps, weapons and stuff coming with free updates (First one coming around January 2013).

The only downside is the absence of single player, you can practice with bots but they're dumber than a bunch of rocks and I would have loved a single player campaign à la Mount & Blade.

But for 20€ is largely worth your money.

This is an excellent game. I was half expecting a game that was all about who can click/attack the fastest but after playing for a couple hours i realized that there was much more to this game!

Teamwork and timing are invaluable to this game.

This game also has stunning scenery and character models.

Definitively a must have for anyone that enjoys medieval games. Nothing like the thrill of cutting limbs off your foes!

Wonderful direction

It's not perfect but its a nice step forward in hand to hand combat, large servers and epic battles. I reminds me of a FPS but without the guns and the shooting. Instead you use swords, bows and arrows, Maces and whatever else you can get your hands on.

I'd recommend this to any of my friends, in fact I actually got a few of them to buy it already.

See you on the battlefield....OFF with your head!!

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare review

By DicXkie posted 18th November 2012

This is a really polished and executed revival of the 'Age of Chivalry' mod; utilising an entirely different engine, this game has everything you could ever ask for from a medieval warfare game: an easy to learn, hard to master combat system, unlockable weapons that scale with your level and gore up the wazoo.

5/5 - I would definitely recommend this game to friends or anyone else who asks about it. The only thing that could make this any better would be mounted combat, so stick to Mount & Blade: Warband if you're feeling more cavalry action is your style, but you never know what could come up in content patches ...

This game is a MUST HAVE if you enjoy the medieval settings.

This is the most realistic version of medieval that you ever get. No elves or orcs. Just pure humans bashing each others heads in! Or off!

This multiplayer mayhem lets you play as two teams fighting each other for glory - or free for all. Choose different classes with different benefits to win on the battlefield

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare review

By Naktabar posted 11th November 2012

At first, I was meh about this game since it's basically a "candy-eyed" multiplayer only version of Mount And Blade...etc... ( I was thinking that at first...) But after seeing some internet review, I wanted to test it for myself.

After doing the mandatory tutorial ( voiced and good script. I loved the tutorial a lot. Not boring at all :D )

Well after the tutorial, I made my jump into my first game... It was amazing ! I mean chopping some dude head off while evading the other guys shot it's like woooooohooooo!

I highly recommend this game to people who like the Hack and Slash medieval melee style game. It's candy for the eyes while... simple to use and amazing to fight with!

I give 8/10 ( I'm sad because of no single player. )

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare review

By arwarker posted 10th November 2012

Chivalry's combat is amazingly fun, and feels a lot more natural - less "floaty" than Mount & Blade: Warband or War of the Roses. The presentation does its job, and the guys who recorded all the soundbites of insults and yelling were obviously having a blast. There's enough variety in terms of game mods (team objectives, think pushable battering rams etc.; last team standing; FFA), although there aren't a whole lot of maps at the moment. The Devs have already announced new maps for the next big patch.

That said, the game still suffers from a fair share of bugs (floating, unreachable catapults; blocking can be glitchy sometimes, etc.) - but the game is rather new and it's a small developing team. I'm sure they'll sort it out eventually!

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare review

This game was brutal and bloody, the mechanics of this game seemed very nice and fluid. The realism in this game is amazing, 2-3 slices and you're dead so you have to be very careful when you want to swing at your opponent or you'll pay dearly. The multiplayer modes are very fun as well!

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare review

Amazing game. Way more fun than War of the Roses. Appropriately visceral and entertaining, especially since dismemberment happens frequently.

It's truly amazing how quickly the devs are working to fix bugs that crop up, and the game is getting more and more enjoyable. Nothing is horribly unbalanced, and every weapon has its uses.

Great game overall. Love it to bits.

Great game, more fun than War of the Roses imho.

It is fun to just run around and start slashing around.

They really tried to make it realistic and they did well.

The best if if course playing with (or against) friends.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare review

By SORRYFORCAPS posted 31st October 2012

It's a pretty cool game. I would say that it could be compared to a first person shooter but with medieval weapons which makes it play a little bit differently. The fighting is like in skyrim pretty much.

I've played three different game modes thus far apparently there's also capture the flag in the game. These are the modes I've played:

1. Free for all - Kill everything you see. Pretty good if you want to learn the game and how to fight effectively I guess, not the most complex game mode I would say.

2. Team objective - One team get an objective, which could be to burn down a village or push a cart to some place, and the other team have to stop them. It's a good game mode if you have an organized team I would say otherwise it turns into a big fight and no one seems to try and complete the objectives.

3. Last team standing - Two teams go against each other and try to eliminate the opposing teams forces. I would think this is the best game mode if you don't have an organized team to back you up.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare review

By Range_Finder posted 29th October 2012

I bought this and War of the Roses around the same time and I have to say I find comparing the two against each other difficult. Both are great games in their own right but have different feels.

Chivalry has made very good use of the UE3 engines capabilities to create maps that give off a very medieval feel, the weapons are all distinctively different to one another and most give a very nice meaty feel when they connect. The music and sound are generally of a good quality although I use the bow at range quite a lot and watch via the very handy 'arrow cam' and the arrow sound just seems out of place quality wise.

As usual with a game that is pretty much exclusively played online the weakest link in the chain is the people who play it, you are likely to get abused for your choice of class, or not playing the way someone else wants you to. If you can ignore those people though you will find a very decent game and community which will keep you coming back for more.

A very nice game

By Neringan posted 28th October 2012

This is really a good game ! Some bugs but developers are working hard on it compared to some games (Battlefi*ld 3 for exemple :) i'm sure you did not understand what game i was talking about =) ).

I'll have a lot of fun with this game for 20€ ! But i hope their will be a strong community.

An Amazing Indie Game

By psychopigeon posted 27th October 2012

This game was born out of a mod but funded through Kickstarter. It is a fantastic game with an addictive combat system, immersive world with beautiful castles, foliage, authentic voices including blood gurgling and death screams as well as full gore creating a horrifying medieval battlefield experience. A variety of weapons are included and more are on there way as well as more game modes. The developers seem keen on updating the game on a regular basis and I'm sure the success of their game so far (Hundreds of Thousands of views on Youtube) has motivated them to add more content. If you're into games like Mount & Blade: Warband then this is a must.

The most fun i'v had playing a game for a long time. I love the team objective maps, they are so big.

Some bugs but u soon forget about them because the gameplay is so fun.

The sound effects are amazing, from the meta hitting metal, voices and shouting to the gurgling sounds someone makes when u cut them down.

Overall a great game, especially for the price. I have payed £30 - £40 for many games that dont even come close to how fun this is. well worth the money. 10/10

A great step forward in Medieval footman warfare! The controls are initially hard to handle (coming from a M&B background), but stick it out and you'll really enjoy it. They plan to have the DLC as free updates too, which is awesome! I wouldn't be surprised if this game keeps expanding and grows in popularity - come online for the mayhem!

So much fun. The combat is intuitive, and yet complex enough to provide some depth. There are a good number of game modes; Team Objective, Team Death Match, Team King of the Hill, and Free For All death match/King of the Hill. The number of maps is OK at this point, with the promise of more to come. Their are four classes; Archer, Man-at-Arms, Vanguard, and Knight. And the classes are well balanced.

Ultimately it's a whole load of fun, and for the price, it's a steal.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare review

By lozauk posted 20th October 2012

Have now played this for a few hours with friends. Good game, if you have played War of the Roses or mount and blade you will be familiar with the medieval FPS concept. This game moves away from the historical reenactment genera by inventing its own timeline, which is ok. The combat system is fun, 3 simple offensive moves and a couple of different blocking maneuvers, you wait for an opening - hit an offensive move - the opponent tries to dodge or block correctly or he is dead. Its a brutal game with many "fun" game modes, like "Kill the filthy peasants". You can decapitate your foes and chop limbs off. The best feature is of course the war cry button which will make your character scream as he runs toward the enemy !!

So initial thoughts, its a fun game. we will see if it has a hook to keep me playing.
