GAME SUMMARY

Chicago 1930 Mac

Rating: 4.8 (70 votes cast)

This real time-tactic-game called “Chicago 1930” captivates you to the time of prohibition, when the battle between police and mafia saw its golden age.
Chicago 1930 impresses with very detailed and varying backdrops offering dark courtyards and dubious brothels as well as monumental buildings of large towns. Embedded in the atmosphere of mafia-like activity as well as the style of the thirties, you have to succeed in procuring the leadership of the city to “your” side, always being conscious about possible ambushes.

Besides you have the choice between mafia and police. This decision influences the game play crucially:
With the police it is your job to clear up crimes at the scene of their happening, as well as protecting important persons from crooks or busting mafia-gangs. You have to track down and interrogate witnesses and collect information in order to finally get onto the mafia as a result from your razor-sharp considerations. It often comes down to a spectacular showdown, when the criminals are hunted down at last and defend themselves with baseball bats, shotguns as well as Tommy-guns.

You have to respond to a totally different challenge in the mafia campaign: Compelling arguments as well as hard words are required, not only to assert yourself against the police, but also against competing gangs.

However, acting circumspectly is necessary as well: you have to silence passer-bys as they have become witnesses of your abominations. You also have to think about tactics and ambushes for superior gangs and by doing so you always need to have your sympathy in the population in your eye.
Strategy is what is asked for!

Every district offers you new opportunities and resources like arms stores and practice establishments. The consistent story instantly transfers you into the role of the person pulling the strings. The characters being commanded by you are capable of improving their abilities as they game goes on. Ensure they become a team of specialists so you can keep up your chances as the battle about Chicago becomes harder consistently. Therefore smart planning and tactics are an assumption for the choice, assignments and the equipment of the up to five characters per mission.

Features:

  • Very detailed graphics allow to experience the atmosphere of the 30’s vividly
  • Characters capable of individual development and expansion of five qualities
  • Two totally different gameplays for mafia and police

Chicago 1930 Mac review

I would tend to agree with previous reviewers in expressing my disappointment regarding this game. Having played a few mafia-based games in the past I had high hopes for something in between action/arcade style shoot em up and empire building strategy. What this game actually amounts to is very much along the lines of the old commandoes games (a format also encountered in Robin Hood) whereby you control a team of characters and must explore various maps from a topdown view neutralising foes, unlocking doors etc.

The progression of the game, although providing a certain degree of variation in terms of upgrading weapons and selecting team members, ultimately proved rather linear and repetitive, to the point where after a few hours gameplay, my interest waned and I gave up.

Some glitches were also encountered when playing on Macbook Air- the game crashed out upon loading whenever the volume controls had been adjusted during a previous session. This was remedied by restoring default settings from the title menu.

All in all, a disappointing experience. Even with its relatively low pricetag, I recommend investing time and money elsewhere.

I like gangster movies, gangster games, and gangster lore. These guys are a world away from my reality, but there's something appealing to watching an alternate set of morals and honor. So whenever I have the opportunity to play a gangster game and immerse myself in that lifestyle without actually having to compromise my oh-so-lofty principles and morals, I take the opportunity with fervor. Unfortunately I usually get disappointed (aside from my experiences with one beautiful action game called Mafia) so I wasn't entirely surprised to find my near complete lack of enthusiasm for Chicago 1930 after playing it for 30 minutes. After playing it for several hours, my lack of enthusiasm had turned into a severe dislike. It's not that my fascination with mafia games had waned, just that the game's AI, and general lack of anything redeeming, made me consider tying this game to a cement block and dumping it in San Francisco Bay

I can't in any frame of mind recommend this title. It has shoddy controls, uninteresting level design, and combat so flawed that it's painful to be part of it. While the premise of fighting as a gangster or a cop over the streets of Chicago is a good one, this just isn't the way to do it. Chicago 1930 isn't a complete waste thanks to some decent visuals and occasional moments of interest, but overall, it's a pretty poor that offers little entertainment value.
