Buccaneer: The Pursuit of Infamy review

This is a very minimalistic game with very little to it and very little atmosphere added. The lack of music in battle really makes the combat seem to drag on, and in a game with slow moving ships it already can feel slow. This is not a bad genre, as there are many games that do what this does better at about double the price. Sid Meirers Pirates is grand or East India Company. Unless this game is under $5 I would advise against it.

I'm not really a pirate fan and it isn't because of Somalia. Whenever I think of pirates, I imagine stinky bearded guys who speaks like they are always gargling something in their mouth. But this game, it became fun being a pirate, or to be exact, a pirate captain! In this game, you are a captain of a group of pirates, and what do you do? The usual things pirate does! Plunder, sink ships, harass small boats, but best of all, explore! However, unlike most pirates in the old times where the captain is practically married to their ships, in this game you have the option to change or buy new ships and upgrade them. As you increase your wealth you can purchase a much bigger ship. But it isn't just about buying big ship and win the game, you have to balance your love for your ship and your relationship with your crew. So from time to time, you have to sort of throw a party for your crew of pirates.

Graphics of this game is great, and it even supports HD (1920x1080). But don't expect too much on the sceneries, for a total game size of an eighth of a gigabyte, it is good enough. Sound is also good and the voice over isn't bad. The game play is like an arcade, and the controls are well thought so it is easy to control your ship. It can be considered that the game is non-linear since you can choose your mission. Although all missions, except for 1 cannot be repeated. That one repeatable mission is of course a place where you can earn money for your ship upgrade.

Overall I gave this game a 5 out of 5 rating and I'm highly recommend it.

Another good thing about this game is the availability of a demo that can be downloaded freely so if you are not satisfied with the review, just download the demo and try it yourself. ^_^

This is fairly reminiscent of Sid Meier's Pirates!, a game I enjoyed very much. The naval combat is very similar; there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of difference between the two. Basically, just sail around in circles, try to line up some decent shots without letting your opponents get one on you.

The game is broken up into a bunch of missions that you can take at your leisure, rather than being forced into a fairly dynamic world (Pirates!). This is a very casual game, where you can do a mission or two at a time.

The infamy system seems eerily familiar as well. In Pirates! your crew morale was based more or less on your plunder. If you failed to plunder enough or often enough, your crew would mutiny or you'd have to end the expedition prematurely. In Buccaneer, you have infamy which is gained through sinking ships and plundering cargo. You lose infamy over time on every mission, and if you let your infamy drop too much it's game over.

Overall, a pretty fun, casual game. With pirates!

Just something about the age of sails and wooden boats that is very attractive. No high tech weapons, just shear cunning and strategy. I eagerly awaited this title and I certainly was not let down.
