The Bluecoats North vs South

Rating: 3.6 (26 votes cast)

In the colorful strategy game NORTH vs SOUTH, you play the head of one of the armies of the Civil War. Your aim is to conquer American territory. This is a remastered version of the game that was released in 1990, with improved graphics and user-friendliness that are up to current standards.

Head up the Yankees or Confederates, and destroy your enemy! Taking up positions, capturing states, assaulting and capturing enemy forts, attacking trains and protecting your railroads . . . you'll have to deal with everything! Capture the port to use the reinforcements coming from Europe. Protect yourself from storms and be wary of those Indians in the war and those Mexican bandits . . . if you don't, you'll be in trouble!

To come out in one piece, you'll have to master taking turns, armed battles in real time, 1 against 30 shoot-outs, and horseback train chases. Whether you play alone or with others, the objective is the same - emerge victorious from these eventful combats!

  • This cult game from 1990 has been remastered with excellent graphics and is more user friendly.
  • Relive the Civil War in the universe of the Blue Tunics
  • Dynamic and strategic battles
  • Several mini games that vary the tempo of the battles (real-time battles, train attacks, fort assaults...)
  • Parameters you can change to your liking! Calm or savagery?

The Bluecoats North vs South review

If you play this game for the first time and like some arcade, then this might give you some fun. However, it will never replaced the original game of infrogrames in 1989 which I played on my Amiga. That game gave tons of hours of enjoyment. In this version however you will find a cheap remake of the older original one. At least they tried....

Pro's:

- Whoever liked the comic books of north and south may find back some of the characters and the game has copied the same kind of options and most of the gameplay from the old one.

- The gameplay on the map is an exact copy (except of the store to buy units) then the old one of infrogrames which was just awesome.

Con's: The battles are a failure, gameplay in the battle is unrealistic, unhandy (everything with the mouse) instead that you can use the cursor keys, which was in the original game. In the original game it was the case that you were dead if you got shot, in this one you have a lifebar.....The fortress attack and hijacking the moneytrain are different gameplay then the original one and is not really fun to play and gets really anoying and is boring.

Overall: Map gameplay is good but the gameplay of battles and fortress/train hijacking where it is all about, are a totally failure.

Many people know North and South from the start of the 90's ( if i remember correct )

This is a remake of the old game, with new graphics and sound.

My first impressin was WOW north vs south i have been waiting for this classic, and after playing it do really look like the old game pretty much.

Basicly the game is good, graphic is good and it feel like north and south.

The thing that i do not like so much is the combat with your infantry/cannons/horses.

In the old game you usede up and down keyboard and it was kind of easy to fight.

Now this system have been replased with a mouse clicking where you press your unit and then what unit it have to attack.. for me it do not feel natural and i had hoped for the old fighting method.

But anyway its a nice little game, and if you liked the old one, then you will also like this one.

I gave it 4 start out of 5 due to the combat mouse click fight system.
