Anomaly Warzone Earth review

A top-down reverse tower defense game that is exceedingly well polished. You control some sort of armored command unit thing that is nearly invulnerable, can deploy special actions such as repair. The player can also control several units that are the "creep" (the enemies in most normal tower defense games) and can choose from any of several roots to take around the battlefield and destroy the various enemy towers.

It is well worth the tag.

Innovative game design however gets repetitive and tiresome after completing a couple of missions.

All in all, there's still room for improvement i.e. introduce chain lasers, increase magnitude of actions the commander or user could execute(skill stats such as high jumping or time warping), presence of alien commander, *skills to protect the frail commander etc.

Outstanding production values in a challenging and motivating title

This reverse tower defense game has you plan a route through enemy-infested terrain while buying and upgrading units in order to achieve the mission's goal.

From the professional intro to the details in the ruined metropolises you traverse the game looks terrific. The scenario plays in Baghdad and Tokyo which is well reflected by the music with its oriental and asian influences. Sound effects are spot on with crisp explosions and weapon effects. The voice acting is very good and the mostly British accents fit well into the overall atmosphere. However, the accent of the only Japanese character sounds a bit stereotypical, but that little lapse is easily forgiven since the acting is still good.

The controls are near-perfect. Opening the route or buying menus pauses the game which gives some time to think. Route changing is just a matter of a few clicks and changing a few intersections keeps the previous route intact so everything feels very natural. Picking up extras is very efficient due to clever pointer snapping. The gameplay can become a little hectic since interaction with the units happens via the commander character who might be occupied picking up extras while his forces are about to be destroyed. But this is definitely adding to the intensity of the game. Placing an extra on the map accelerates the commander so often he arrives just in time to save a unit from destruction. A fast-forward function prevents boredom while units cycle through terrain that is already cleared of enemies.

The missions are quite varied but mostly center around reaching a certain point without being killed. Usually the task at hand changes as the mission progresses so there are sometimes surprising turns of events that keep you on your toes.

The difficulty on the middle level (one above "casual") is quite challenging and gives a nice sense of accomplishment when you survive one of the more difficult sequences. The story is good for this type of game with a little surprise at the end.

Considering the amount of work that must have gone into all the details and level design I feel a little bad about this, but the game could have been a little longer. On the other hand, nothing feels recycled and the game doesn't overstay its welcome. Anyway, for the discount price the game was more than worth it and for the regular price it's still a very fair deal.

Anomaly Warzone Earth is a reverse tower game. Lead your squad through mazes to take back Earth.

It's a different take on tower dafense games and the effort is not too shabby. It's a fun game, learning curve is not steep.

While it's not a real long game you will come back to play it many times and it's best played in short bursts.

I'm a fan of tower defense games like Sanctum, Orcs Must Die!, and Dungeon Defenders. This game brings an interesting twist to the genre, and lives up to all of the great reviews it's gotten.

A nice maze like game (described as reverse tower defense by developers but really finding a path through a bunch of walls is called a maze...) with decent concepts & decent graphics. Was well worth the purchase price. Translated to an English environment just fine unlike some other games I could name.

Anomaly is one of those games you can easily pick up and squeeze in a short session now and then. It's entertaining and highly polished. The concept is innovative enough to be fun for a few hours.

The game has two gameplay modes. There's a story mode that has you roughly following a given path and objectives. In this mode you unlock new units and another gameplay mode. Said unlocked mode is more of an open map you can drive around at your leisure and fight enemy waves.

The story mode has one of the best voice actings I've encountered in games. Objectives are varied and the amount of levels is just about right before it gets repetitive. Graphics are surprisingly good. The low price is also a nice plus.

A reverse tower defense game where you progressively build and upgrade your armored vehicles while choosing the path they undertake to reach an objective. There's a bit of "rock-paper-scisors" game play, as some towers punish you for not having certain vehicles, but overall, you are given some liberty into what upgrades and vehicles you can pick up.

Very good presentation, with top notch intros and voice acting (i had to check twice to make sure there wasn't a big studio behind this). Overall, fun gameplay, and certainly worth the 10€.

At first I thought that the idea of swapping roles in a tower defense games was a novelty or a gimmick. In Anomaly, you play the attackers. But it brings across a similar strategy.

It's like you're controlling towers that move, in a sense. And there's further strategy in the paths that you take. It ends up being far more fun than I expected, and the war theme comes across fantastically. The production values are impressive. There's a lot of polish and they've got a high-budget going on in this game.

It's great for someone that's tired of Tower Defense games or someone that just wants a new type of strategy game to play. Highly recommended.

The first thing you will spot with Anomaly is the presentation and polish. For an indie game the presentation is amazing, from the graphical intros for each round to the voice acting, everything has been carefully nurtured to full effect.

The gameplay is intuative and very easy to pick up and play without any hand holding required.

There is only one downside with the game, and it isn't one that deserves any negativity, this being that it's too short! But it's short in a good way because rarely in PC gaming of recent times have I completed a game wishing that it didn't end and that I could go on. It has 14 missions and all are replayable on a more difficult level. There are even a couple of modes that keep you coming back for more, but I want more story!

But hang on, I only paid less than a tenner so what am I complaining about? I would gladly have paid £15 for the game and another £5 for some extra DLC maps.

I hope that 11 bit studios don't get consumed by a major publisher because these guys know how to make a game - nice graphics, nice storrytelling, nice acting, simple to understand gameplay, and a feel that makes you think you're playing a AAA title.

Bravo - and bring on a sequel (which would be ace with co-op or multiplayer - consider 2 player pacman as a theory :D )…

Looking at the screenshots, one would expect Anomaly to be a solid, very polished Red Alert 3 clone. The graphics are a similar mix of over-the-top effects and detailed environments and listening to your units babble with a fine British accent while the dramatic soundtrack is playing makes it clear that the overall presentation owes more than just a little to that particular title.

And that's not a bad thing (in fact it is an outstanding achievement for an "indie" title to reach this level on a €10 game). RA3 had a good presentation ... its problems lie with the gameplay that tries to mix unit-focused with large-scale strategy. Thankfully, this is the one area where Anomaly is entirely different.

You may have heard comments about the game being an "upside-down tower-defense title". Forget about it, because the description is misleading at best. Tower-defense suggests that you passively watch a small playfield from above, plotting your next move and giving up all control once you have sent your units on their way. Instead, Anomaly focuses on one particular team and you'll always be right with them.

Your character actually walks along the team (no waves to send in, there's just one team per mission) and is right there to lend support and micro-manage all of your teams needs. While there is a tactical map where you can control your team's movement (by telling them where to go at the next intersect) so that they can collect funds or attack specific enemies from a point where they are weak, the focus is clearly on the support and micro-management parts:

"Distract enemy towers with your character until the missile-launchers (which you just upgraded and which you are sending in right behind a heavily armored unit to take the the first few hits) are in range, then drop a smoke-bomb to cover your team and use the time to collect the repair-box nearby, so that you can get that guy in the front patched-up" is a description of a typical scene here and it should give you an idea on what to expect: In this game, you are not just the mastermind pulling the strings... you're right there with your troops.
