Aquanox 2: Revelation review

By mystics108 posted 26th August 2011

The game looks ok but is not much fun to play. I mean you float around for a long time and when you do get into a fight its pretty hard to kill the other CPU's, not necessarily my cup of tea but you might like it.

Aquanox 2: Revelation review

Aquanox 2 once again takes you to the world of Aqua, a future where following a series of cataclysms mankind has retreated to the oceans and setup a new civilization.

Despite the number 2 this isn't a sequal to Aquanox. The game casts you as a William Drake, a naive owner of freighter, the last vestigaes of your familes corporate fleet. The game runs concurrently to Aquanox and you'll visit many of the same locations and speak to the same people. The game plays the same as Aquanox, and retains the same controls and weapons. Some things are different, you can have more then one ship at a time, but it otherwise resembles Aquanox.

Graphics, once you turn them up, are good and any modern system shouldn't have any problems. The gamma correction appears to be on the dark side, which means that I had to turn it up for a few missions.

Sound quality is good, the weapon effects are distinctive and clear, and the music is good with what appears to be a greated selection of tracks then Aquanox. Voice work is adequate, though some of the accents appear to some what forced.

However what the voice actors actully say is not so good. In betwen missions you can speak to the other members of the crew, and other relvant parties by clicking on them in various locations in you freighter or the city that you are visiting. The plot is fairly thin, with you being forced to help a crew fo treasures seekers looking for a mysterious grave said to house some powerful artifact. The problem is that this is mixed in with talk of destiny, prophecy, free will, meaning of life and so on. This means that the dialogue is fragmentary poretnetious and stilled. The ending is okay, though its quite obviously a setup for a sequel which would seem to indicate that there would be a tie in with the first game.

Mission design does suffer some of the same faults as the first, with any single fault meaning that you have to redo the entire mission. The game does however bring in a particulary new annoyance with two missions requiring you to run the guanlet of laser fences, which will instantly kill you if you touch them. Wingman appear to be compenant thought you don't have any contol over them.

The game was stable. The only issue was where skipping a certain cutscene apparently placed you in combat with the enemy in such a postion that they could kill you very easily. This didn't show all the time though.

Overall the game isn't too bad as long as you are aware the you'll have to redo certain missions till you can pass them.
