A solid RPG - if you have the patience for it

By Vyranthas posted 15th April

There's plenty of quality to be found in this title, but due to the cumbersome movement and camera controls, it requires quite a bit of patience. The story is compelling and the graphics are pretty decent... unfortunately, the dialogue didn't always seem very well translated. However, If you can look past these flaws you could definitely find yourself getting immersed in this game!

I did not read the books, so some of the story seemed a bit confusing. While the game seems to have some interesting choices and mechanics, and leveling itself is pretty fun (reminded me of the old wizardries), the process itself is tedious. The first area that you are in, you can easily come across a large pack of overpowered NPCs, that one-shot you. In some areas, a level 1 creature is across the "street" from a lev 40 one. To advance past the first main story line, I had to grind my way through whatever boards and rats i could find, just to advance two levels. After two hours of this, I got bored. I found the graphics lacking, the interface - something to get used to. Interesting group controls, lacking story, and slow painful grind. I would not recommend this game in its current state.

A Farewell to Dragons it's a classical rpg/action (it's looks like Sacred3 with some Baldur's Gate and Arcanum ideas). It's a low budget production, so it cant be compared with Dragon Age or Neverwinternights...but it's a good game with an interesting plot.

A Baldur's Gate style RPG crossed with an Arcanum Steampunk world. Fun at first, by the level grinding gets tedious. Decent story, but the ending, once patched using advice from a gamers on 1C's forum for the game, leaves a lot to be desired.

It could be that I'm just a sucker for this type of RPGs, but even though my intention was only to give this game a quick spin, I found myself drawn in and stuck for hours right off the bat.

It's an isometric group-based game in the style of the Neverwinter Nights series, but feels less linear and more open-ended. Haven't spent a lot of time yet, but really looking forward to digging in deeper. All-in-all, a happy surprise.

A Farewell to Dragons can be pretty fun if you are an RPG gamer, being party based, it requires some strategical thinking into it. It'd be unfair to compare it with the recent RPG games, but then again, it has that old-school taste that nowadays the games lack.

Good purchase, especially if it's on discount.

Em, maybe I'm not into this kind of game mechanic...It's a good game with detailed graphics and GUI, but the battle system (sort of like BG...) isn't ideal for me... I'm more into TBS so maybe you will like this game. Overall a polished game and I recommend get this on sale.

Old school rpg with a flaw or two. Bad localization coupled with a dull world stops this from being a great game. Things tend to get confusing in battles when you have a big party.

Not a bad story and old schoolness makes this a playable game at least.

A Farewell to Dragons offers a good plot, with a lot of funny conversations and a great story but fails in the most important thing a game has to offer, it's gameplay. It's graphics are really obsoleted and the gameplay it's cumbersome, you want to keep playing and go on with the story but it would be better with a more smooth and developed gameplay

I really enjoyed A Farewell to Dragons, it is a great old school rpg with the ability to control multiple characters and a good story line to follow.

This action RPG is fairly standard in the genre. You fight using elemental magic, swords, firearms and totem spells. A interesting mechanic to the elemental magic is it's effected by the time of day so it creates a neat strategy for the game. It is based off a Russian fantasy novel that I'm not familiar with but the story is pretty good and there are some fun and interesting characters to interact with. If you are a fan of the action RPG genre I would say give this game a try.

For me A Farewell to Dragons was a bit letdown. At first it felt really nice old school rpg game... like Arcanum, fallout etc. But it was really hard and had dull gameplay. I've tried many times to start it over and play it through but i just couldn't! The graphics get props tho. If you're up for nostalgic gameplay and challenge im sure you will enjoy this game.

A game released 2009 that doesn't work on Windows 7, has little to no community & multiple complaints of crashes & bugs.

If it wasn't for the fact1C produced this I would have blamed EA or Ubisoft for how low quality it is.

A "don't buy".

The colors seem like a little off and the translation for the dialogue is terrible, but the gameplay is simple and fantastic. The game has excellent turn based combat, and there are plenty of quests to undertake. Furthermore, the story is pretty unique.

This is a decent action-RPG with nice graphics and average story. Nothing overly exciting, but nothing that's catastrophically bad, either. The worst part of the game is the combat system - you have a party of up to 6 people, and you get to control them all in real-time combats. You can pause and adjust the orders of each character, but one has to ask why? Auto-pause or turn-based would have been much more appropriate. Fortunately, the game is easy enough on the "normal" difficulty setting that you won't have any problems defeating the monsters you encounter even if some characters do stupid things at times. Even should a few of them "die" (fall unconscious), you can retreat and lick your wounds for some time since the game only ends if all your characters fall unconscious.

The skills, perks and abilities you gain each time you gain a level is pretty standard fare, even if there are some interesting ones. Some of them should have been made into auras; booster skills require you to activate the skill every Nth second, which makes them far less useful. It's also annoying that there are some differences you can't see in the skill descriptions, like casting time. This may make some skills pretty worthless even if they seem good when you read the descriptions. You may want to save before allocating skill points to give you a chance of trying out new skills before you decide if you want them.

The game does a lot of things right, but it is late a couple of years. Maybe I played too many games that played similar, maybe I wasn't really interested in the story. Anyhow, it's a pretty standard RPG experience. Skill trees are diverse, villains are mean and heroes are heroic. While the setting is quite interesting the game ultimately failed to make me play it more. The funny thing is that I remember it once in a while but I never picked it up again after leaving it 5+ hours into the game. 3 stars.

Recently party based RPG have become a rare breed,so, let's see what this one has to offer.

First, the most important : gameplay. Following the steps of Baldur's Gate and the likes, it uses real time with pause mechanics. The combat is challenging, and quite fun, even if the encounter design is not enough varied. Character advancement is interesting, borrowing the idea of perks from games like Fallout or Arcanum.

The story might be interesting, the game been an adaptation from a book and all, but sadly, the localisation is quite poor. But one can enjoy the steampunk setting.

The game is not bug-free, and, as far as I know, there is no hope for patches.

The presentation is not bad, but nothing special.

I raised some negative points, but, for someone who likes party based, challenging RPG, whit a nice atmosphere, A Farewell to Dragons is still a solid choice.

Decent old-school RPG game. The setting is nice. If you liked games such as Baldur's Gate then you will like this one as well. Your party can vary a lot, thus adding to reply value. Quests in the campaign can be annoying sometimes, but overall the game is well balanced and will keep you happy for many hours. Considering the price, I recommend it to any gamer who likes RPG games.

I find this a great game, it's similar to neverwinter nights. I really like the atmosphere they created in this game

Sounds are nice and music too.

What is disliked was the scouting of the maps, was a bit too long and sometimes tedious with the fog of war

they could have made that better.

but al in all i would give it a 4 star out of 5

P.S.

This is a real good game :)

A Farewell to Dragons is a classic RPG a la Baldur's Gate and other games in the series. Having to start as a premade character is a mild disappointment, though you can customize your skills as you see fit, earning new opportunities and abilities as you progress through the game.

The story is pretty much linear, but fortunately you can choose which side-quest to take, you don't have to take them all (even if this is recommended as you'll have a much better chance in some of the rather tough fights you'll encounter later in the game). The story isn't going to win any points for originality, but it is enough to keep you playing.

Graphics - they are a bit dated, but work well enough. Most of the time you'll spend zoomed out so far that tiny details on the characters won't be too noticeable. Otherwise nice effects on spells and weaponry.

Sound - good music! Perhaps the best point of the game, the music is well worth listening to even outside of the game. Sound effects are pretty much metal on metal and the clash of battle otherwise. No voice acting is a minus.

To sum it up, this is a decent role-playing game, but I'd wait until I saw it at a bargain rate as there's several better buys in the RPG section before purchasing this one.

Three stars out of five.

I really wanted to like this game...but in the end it was just too annoying to enjoy. The story is confusing, which I was willing to give it a pass on since it's from a Russian book, so I assumed something's just been lost in translation. Confusion aside, it really is a good story for an RPG, and I liked the graphics. The biggest annoyance for me was the inventory system - there needs to be an easier way of moving items around. Gameplay was mostly typical for an RPG, but there are glitches that caused me to start over a couple of times.

I have not finished the game, and I'm not sure if I ever will - I'm currently stuck and don't really feel like going back a few saves to try again. It might get better as it goes, so take my review with a grain of salt.

A somewhat disjointed take on a Diablo Clone, This "action RPG" attempts to mesh fairly quick-paced gameplay of diablo with an interesting Arcanum like setting in which typical fantasy races (Dwarves, elves, etc) have technologically advanced to the use of black powder weapons, steam engines, and similar items. While i will admit that I find it interesting that at one point my party consisted of a dwarven pistoleer, a barbarian totam-wolf-shaman-woman, and a psychopath with a chainsaw (that last one was me), The gameplay was sadly fairly repetitive after a couple of hours. Also, the game was clearly not designed with english as its primary language, and at times this makes the storyline confusing at best. Overall not a bad game, and if you are a big fan of action RPGs (I am not, really) you should definately check it out. Also if (more like me) you loved Arcanum it is still worth looking at this pseudo-spiritual successor.

This could have been a 5 star game if not for the glitches, repetitiveness, and game crashing bug at the end. I'd still recommend it (especially if you can get it on sale). I put in around 40-50 hours and finally beat the game (I'll explain how to get past the end-game crash later).

If you've ever played a game like Baulder's Gate or Arcanum, you'll feel right at home with this one. It is a 6 party-member style RPG where you control everthing about your characters, from leveling them up to what they wear. There is an incredible amount of customization when it comes to leveling. Each level gives your character(s) stat points and skill points. The skill trees vary from character to character, and your main character can be pretty much anything from a super powerful mage to a steam armor wearing killing machine wielding a flame thrower. It is a neat blend of fantasy/sci-fi that really draws you into the world.

While the story itself is pretty engaging, much is lost in the translation from Russian to English. I often found myself wondering what the heck my dialoge options were, and that occasionally led to saying exactly the opposite of what I wanted. This led to some moments where I laughed out loud.

I had only two major issues with the game that caused me to lower my game rating to 3 stars. Characters constantly getting stuck and the final game crash. The game itself was very stable other than that final crash, having not once crashed for me until the end. There is a fix for the final crash though it isn't official as the developers have pretty much ignored the English users for now. The link to that fix is here: http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=11038&page=2

The characters getting stuck is just something you have to deal with and it gets really old. Save often and save using multiple save spots. They programmed in some of the worst character pathfinding I've seen in a game. In cities, it gets almost unbearable. Many times you can save when you are stuck and immediately load to fix the issue, but that really breaks the fun of the game sometimes.

I also wished there was a little more variety in the maps (the world is HUGE but repetitive), and that there were a few more quests that weren't "Go here, kill bad guys, come back for reward". Still, it had enough good points to keep me playing through the entire game which is a rare thing for me. I hope you enjoy it as well.

a farewll to Dragons is a classic party based rpg the likes of Baulders gate or Dragon Age Origions. Although you do not create a character but start as a pre made character although you are free to change his stats or skills as you level up.

The graphics are nicely detailed and the animations are good. Background graphics are nicely done with a lot of little touches such as rabbits running about help the atmosphere.

Sound is much as you can expect ranging from twang of bows steel on steel. The music i have to say is excellant. The composer has done a fantasic score which suits the overal atmosphere of the game.

The game is easy to get into with a good tutorial and the interface is easy to get to grips with. Controls are straight forward and are now standard to these types of games.

I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys party based rpg or likes the steampunk style (dwarf railways).
