Anno 2070 review

The most feature-rich game in the Anno series. Highly detailed, a good campaign to learn through, fantastic meta-game features, free downloadable missions and extra content.

Even though it's full off Ubis dubious DRM, I highly recommend it. The online functionality is a great enhancement to an already fantastic package.

A very good game, very similar to other games in this series so if you liked them you will like this, same can be said if disliked them. There are some problems which hold it back greatly which is are issues with online play only working with handful of people, very limited and punishing DRM and very poor/abcent AI players.

Having played Anno 2070 for many hours now, I can wholeheartedly recommend this title. the UI is sleek and the gameplay follows suit. What's more, the multiplayer is a lot of fun with friends.

A Wonderful Surprise

By Wootus posted 30th December 2011

I'd never played an Anno game before this one, but once I read the description "city-builder meets RTS" somewhere online and saw that it was set in 2070, I downloaded the demo and was immediately drawn to it. There's a great art style to the graphics and the gameplay is very addictive. I never thought setting up trade routes and supply chains could be so satisfying.

Countless hours worth of gaming to be found here. There's options for people who like to play more RTS-ish or more city-sim-ish (yeah, those are words.) There's a great online component where you can vote for leaders who, when elected, allow for different bonuses to be implemented in your games. There's world events that are basically random missions that come up online. There's a sandbox/skirmish type mode and also a ton of missions. This is all in addition to the main campaign.

The music, sound and graphics are beautiful and the presentation is superb. The game runs smoothly and there isn't noticeable slow-down even when you have thousands of residents and hundreds of buildings on a huge map, and the maps can be really huge.

The only problem I would say that I had with the game would be that ubisoft has a really crap online service. Frequent down-times for maintenance and problems with setting up and connecting to uPlay. A horrible incident where I couldn't play at all because the servers were down and you need to log-in manually to play offline (WTF) and I had forgotten my password but I couldn't reset it because the damn servers were down!

Other than that isolated incident I'm thoroughly glad I bought this and so far it's been worth every cent. Highly recommended.

Anno 2070 review - Unbelievable

By Cmains89 posted 29th December 2011

This game is amazing, I can easily lose hours of my life on this game. It sucks you in so that you are contantly planning your next move and future plans.

The Ecology versus mining versus tech side of the game is intriguing and trying to balance the eco building you need to use with the industrial and tech is an interesting challange.

The other great featur is the world events - these are two or three missio campaigns that are only available for a month at a time - challanging and time-sensitive!

The use of the Senate and World council to decide what bonuses and special powers are offered to player is very cool.

Basically if you like Age of Empires, Civilisation or Rise of Nations you will love this game!!!

Anno 2070 review

By RoboWolf posted 26th December 2011

2070 is an amazing game in itself, as compared to 1404 there isn't too much different in the underlying gameplay but the futuristic setting makes it feel distinctly different. It still retains the non-intrusive UI and intuitive gameplay Anno is known for that isn't terribly hard to pick up and play if your new to the series. The graphics, while not a drastic advance over 1404, are still top-notch and beautiful for a city building game.

Only a few things detract from an otherwise amazing game. The military side of the game feels like a step back from 1404 in some aspects with the lack of any land units. While there is a handful of both sea and air units, military action (particularly against the AI's) eventually becomes tedious. Along with this I had wished building underwater was expended because as it is it doesn't play much different then on land and in regards to the buildings there isn't a terrible deal you can do.

These aside, 2070 builds upon the sturdy foundation laid down by its predecessors and refines them into another excellent entry into the Anno series.

The game is Great, Maybe the best game in the strategy genere that can be found out there these days.

Its based on Economy Building, while you can still focus on Military, the game allows it all.

you have the 2 different Building options the eco and industrial, which gives you game variety and keeps you on for repeatability.

Lots of units and buildings to build, great multiplayer persistent system, the game is worth every cent.

i would gladly recomend it to anyone.

Amazing.

The Anno devs have outdone themselves, again.. Who would have thought? After a brilliant Anno 1701 and Anno 1404, this brings the complexity and gameplay depth up a notch yet again.

Do note however that it does not have the same cozy warm feeling and atmosphere as the previous games did, this is a game about industrial expansion and desperate management of ecology.

As someone that is obsessed about urban cities, i'm loving it.

The ecology aspect is done in a very good way, gameplay wise. It is not as silly as in other games or media, "oh no save the planet". No. It is instead an intricate gameplay mechanic which is inherently undeniably realistic.

1. You need electricity for most production buildings.

2. If you play as the Tycoon faction, your early electricity will come from high power but high polluting coal plants. If you play the Eco faction you'll get low power but no polluting wind turbines. The wind turbines have a large area where they lower each others effectiveness if not spread out properly.

3. Power plants, mining resources, producing goods all damage the environment in a small way which adds up to a BIG deal in terms of gameplay. Your islands have their individual "eco score", it can go negative or positive in a very fine manner.

In the mid to endgame, you'll unlock buildings and stuff that improves the environment, such as waste recycling centers that is aided by more houses around it. They cost alot of resources and upkeep however, but are generally quite managable.

And i have not even started to discuss the underwater aspect (an entirely seperate faction for that which unlocks as you play, the Tech faction). One great way to ensure power supply on your home island is to build loads of oil pumps out at sea, causing no eco damage to your home!

It is by far the most complex, deep and wonderful Anno game to date, IF you enjoy the industrial aspect and is fine with the tone of the game being more of a Blade Runner style than a cozy forest village.

Furthermore, the online features are spectacular. You (as your online account) can vote on senate members, and presidents. From any of the 3 factions (Tycoon, Eco, Tech). This will impart small bonuses on your gameplay. For instance siding with the Eco faction might give your wind turbines 5% extra power output, but more maintenance.

You can even see statistics on the "world", how other players impact it. Do many of them play as industrial filthy emperors, then the world statistic will reflect that!

Overall these online bonuses and such are done in a very satisfying way. They are NOT overpowered bonuses that make you feel like it is cheating. They are small tiny benefit/downside options. If you pick one you can't have the other 2.

Can't reccomend this enough, if you are okay with the new industrial direction of the series.

I played with the demo non stop and decided to pre-order immediately. Its fun, addicting and the graphics are incredible. Game play as with every Anno game is spot on,and its easy to understand whats going on and what you need to do. If you looking for a great RTS game look no further because you have found it. Anno veterans should also check this game out as with every Anno series things get better!!!
