4x4 Hummer review

Pretty mediocre in all aspects, unfortunately. The look of the vehicles in the showroom is about the only redeeming feature. I got it for my son, and he put it up after only a couple of plays, and I could see why. Stay away from this one unless you *really* want to drive a hummer. And then, there are better games.

The good:

-Nice graphics for it's ageing engine

-Off-road trial racing (instead of just track racing)

-Somewhat varied vehicles which feel different

-Works flawlessly on windows 7

The bad:

-Cars handling is kinda poor; you can turn on a dime, tron-like

-Slowdowns with AA enabled, no matter how powerful your hardware is

-Weird graphic glitch where shadows sometimes won't show under cars, adding to the floaty feeling

Conclusion:

At the price is an ok try, but still far from good.

This is a pretty poor racing game. I appreciate the work they put into the environments, but the tracks are poorly laid-out and it's often hard to even see where you're supposed to be going. The car controls feel arcadey and unrealistic, and while the graphics are tolerable, there's nothing special about them. Even at a bargain price, there are a dozen racers identical to this that have better gameplay, so there's just not much reason to get it.

This game is very rocky. I found my vehicle constantly bumped around as it crossed the rough terrains, but I felt that the bumpiness was too jerky for what it should be. The graphics are okay, but not great. I really hated the fact, however, that from the driver perspective, it was impossible for me to see the track most of the time. I had to play this game from a outside camera view.

If you can settle not using the driver view, this game is okay. However, I can't, so I don't play it.

Not a bad game, just the average off-roader with an emphasis on the wear and tear of each part of your truck. Pretty similar to Cabela's Off-Road Adventures or MotorM4X. There's plenty to do, gameplay and graphics are ok. The problem is the Chrome engine :

1) designed for "narrowscreen" (hopelessly vert- in widescreen)

2)long loading times (even between menus)

3)advanced effects (bloom, AA) have a huge impact on the framerate, regardless of your config

A number of other budget racing games are built on the Chrome engine and share the same flaws : UAV Racing 4x4 (same game as 4x4 Hummer, but with russian vehicles/maps), Xpand Rally, GM Rally...

If the technical aspect is important to you, avoid.

If you don't mind, you'll probably like the game. The cockpit view has good detail and free mouse look, which is great and rare in an off-road game. With such an outdated engine however, this game is not worth 40€ to me.
