1914 Shells of Fury review

The game is ok. It can get pretty boring sometimes. Definitely repetitive.

If you want something uniquely ww1'ish, then unfortunately ww1 submarines were not as extiting as ww2.

Good concept though.

I am a submarine buff, and i am glad i bought this fine game.It is so different from the others,i found that once i got know the game, turned out to be very enjoyable.I wish there was more compartments to go to,but the ones there is are great, good quality graffics. And the sound effect of the sub are very impressive, but no vocals, but has real Morse code. The deck and anti gun are really good. The first tour felt like i was in some fantasy world being so different, but it did not take long to realize the oh so real dangers ahead.

This is a good game for WWI submarine fans and for those who enjoy realism. The scenery is very gray and dreary, but this is after all what the North Sea looks like. It's well priced game for the amount of game play hours one gets.

A decent submarine simulation on an original subject. It's definitely not on par with the Silent Hunter series either graphically or in terms of gameplay or immersion. Despite this it can be a fun game and a diversion from WW2 sub combat if you're fed up with that. It is definately a different experience trying to hunt merchants with only the primitive equipment of the era available. The AI is rather competent and you will see for example lone merchants doing a 180 and escaping at full speed when spotting you (unlike in SH3 for example where they'll zigzag but still come at you)

The graphics and sounds are rather bland but you can pick up some mods from subsim.com that enhance the experience by adding crew voices etc. The biggest single problem in terms of gameplay I think is the periscope spotting. It is rather unrealistically hard to stay undetected.

I really want to like this game. At first impression, it creates a good WW 1 era atmosphere, and it feels cool to be able to select between the early German u-boat types. If you're using to WW 2 u-boats, Shells of Fury is also good in giving you the feeling that you are really driving more primitive boats.

However, unfortunately the game itself is also somewhat primitive. Part of being a skipper is the feeling of being on actual water. Shells of Fury's strange water totally fails in creating this feeling. The u-boat is behaving like on rails, the only movement is a slight up and down movement. No rolling to starboard and stern. This kills most of the immersion that was created by other aspects of the game. Another negative thing here is the bad quality of the sky (where you can see the edges of the skybox texture), the land (looks nearly the same everywhere) and the weather (only 2 patterns)?

The missions in the campaign have good descriptions which seem to be researched rather properly, this is again a plus for this game. However, the campaign is fixed, and the missions seem to be the same all the time. You also start at the ocean, not in the harbor.

Hunting enemy vessels is surely tense. However, they can see your periscope from very far away, which makes everything rather hard.

So, how should I conclude? As I started, it's a game I want to like. So far, it's also the only way of doing some WW1 u-boating. But it really has flaws, unfortunately.

Good and Very interesting Game with a different method of control. It's not in the leauge of Silent Hunter-2-3-4, but its not in that price range either. It requires skill and attention in sinking Enemy Ships. The biggest problem is it does'nt have a save game.

Its automatic and your missions accumulate. Unless your killed, then its a new player and back to the begining.

Well here's good news for all you, when your killed or destroyed, you be informed what disaster has befallen you and you screen will freeze and a numerical countdown will be shown.

i.e. 30-29-28-27 etc. Now manually turn your PC off, restart it and the game and you'll start the mission again at the begining of that mission, simple eh!, but don't let the clock/timer run out. All in all now its a pretty good Sub Game for the price.

Here's a game set in an often overlooked time period- WWI. Gameplay straddles that fine line between realistic (read- complicated) and arcade (rollescoaster fun ride). Overall a great game with very few bugs and very stable. I was able to run it in a dual screen system without problems. I strongly recommend this game to any sub-sim fan.

A very different type of game than SHIII. This is a wonderful game it's set in WWI and the game reflects the technology of the age accurately. only bad point was that the graphics were a little sub-par (pun intended) compared to other games in the genre from the time but that's a minor issue that the sub-sim community will most likely provide a fix for at a later date.

On sale under 4 usd, this game is great value. Sub simulator are nowadays less common than they used to be. And they usually limits themselve to WWII or modern time. Shells of fury on the other hand brings you back to the early days of submarine warfare :WWI. Unfortunately, you only get to play the German side, yet the game is quite effective. Ships seem accuratety modeled and you certainly get the "WWI" feeling (torpedo wakes, machinegun tracers). The campaigns are well done too, with a progression in the performance envelope of submarines in the type of missions. And contrary to many games, you actually have to care about minefiels and navigational hazards...

Submarine sims have to be one of my favorite types of games, so I had to get Shells of Fury. If you are not into sub-sims, then you won't enjoy this game. The good points: WW1 submarine combat (no sonar, radar, poor destroyers), easily playable interface (similar to Silent Hunter series), and price.

The bad points: graphics for water look nintendo 8-bit, but play very well with troughs exposing the periscope; enemy ships, even trawlers, seem omnipotent at spotting periscopes even at 4 KMs away!

A good game if you collect sub-sims, but if you are not an enthusiast, you best steer clear.

I liked this game. I have read bad reviews in other places, mostly saying it gets old very quickly.

You see, if wou buy, say, a car sim, you cannot expect more than driving arond. If you buy a car sim expecting combat, romance, drama and such things, it is obvious that you are going to be disapointed.

Most people who wrote bad reviews about this game had, probably, such expectations in mind.

What I think is this: this sim owes nothing to a "silent hunter" game (being actually quite similar in many respects), inasmuch as the WW1 subs were infinetly more simple and any realistic game could not do wonders as to include non-existing and non-historical features just to make the game more "firework-like".

I like to collect precise and acurate sims. In this sense this is a good game.
